On Feb. 21, Mark Morgan, Director, Eastern Oklahoma VA Health Care System, honored Tulsa Police Officers Jeff Statum and Todd Henley during a ceremony at the Ernest Childers VA Outpatient Clinic for their selfless act of kindness last December.

The Tulsa Police Department conducted a welfare check on Dec. 23 after the family of a Marine Veteran contacted the Veterans Crisis Line out of concern for his safety.

Henley and Statum, also Marine Veterans, visited the Veteran’s home and determined he was not a threat to himself. While spending an hour with the Veteran and his eight-year-old son, the officers volunteered to help the family put up their Christmas tree.

“(The Veteran) was talking about finances being low at the time and he said he didn’t have time to put up a Christmas tree,” said Officer Statum. “His son had fun doing it. The look on his face - that was awesome. When we left, I said ‘that kid needs something to open (for Christmas).”

Tulsa PD reached out to VA who contacted local non-profit organizations. Jeepers Anonymous donated $350 worth of toys and groceries.

Tulsa PD also purchased toys and food and the officers took all the items to the family on Christmas Eve.
