World War II Veteran Who Witnessed Iwo Jima Flag Raising to Speak at POW/MIA Day Ceremony

August 29, 2013

The Jack C. Montgomery VA Medical Center invites the public to attend its Prisoners of War (POW) and Missing in Action (MIA) Recognition Day Ceremony on Sept. 10 to honor and remember these Veterans.

Guest speaker will be Lloyd Dinsmore, a World War II Veteran, who fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima as part of the 2nd Marine Armored Amphibious Battalion.

After four days of fighting, Dinsmore witnessed his fellow troops raise an American flag on Mount Suribachi on Feb. 23, 1945. Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal took the image of the second flag-raising, which is one of the most iconic photos from World War II.

The ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. in the medical center’s auditorium, which is located on the second floor in the south end of the hospital. Light refreshments will be served.
