VA Medical Center Welcomes New Leadership

The Jack C. Montgomery VA Medical Center is pleased to announce the appointment of Brian A. Hawkins, MHA, as the facility’s Medical Center Director, and Bryan C. Matthews, MBA, as the new Associate Director.

Both Hawkins and Matthews arrive from Maryland where Hawkins served as the Associate Director of Finance for the VA Maryland Health Care System (VAMHCS) and Matthews served as the Executive Assistant to the Associate Director of VAMHCS.

As Chief Executive Officer, Hawkins will provide leadership and strategic guidance to this primary and secondary care center that employs over 1,000 people. The medical center serves a 25-county area with approximately 58,000 veterans currently enrolled. The medical center operates an outpatient clinic at the Muskogee facility and community based outpatient clinics in Tulsa, Hartshorne, and Vinita, OK.

Hawkins also served as the Associate Director and Site Manager for the Perry Point VA Medical Center in Maryland. Other positions within VHA include Business Office Director at the VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System, Associate Chief Financial Officer at the Atlanta VA Medical Center, and Senior Budget Analyst at the West Side (Jesse Brown) VA Medical Center in Chicago, IL. Mr. Hawkins began his career as a Clerk/Typist at the Hines VA Medical Center in Hines, IL.

A native of Little Rock, Ark., he holds a bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University and a master’s in Health Administration from Governors State University. He is a 2007 graduate of VA's Healthcare Leadership Institute and Leadership VA, as well as a 2009 Federal Executive Institute Selectee. He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives, American Pilot and Aircraft Owners Association, and Rotary Club International.

Mr. Matthews was appointed Associate Director of the Jack C. Montgomery VAMC on Jan. 31. As Associate Director, he serves as the facility’s chief operating officer charged with day-to-day operations and management of the facility’s $200 million annual budget and has direct responsibility for Acquisitions & Materiel Management, Business Office, Canteen, Education, Facilities Management, Fiscal, Human Resources, Nutrition and Food, Police and Voluntary Services.

He began his VA career at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center in Detroit, MI, as the Chief of Supply, Processing and Distribution, and later as the Administrative Assistant to the Associate Director. He then transferred to the VA Maryland Healthcare System in Baltimore, MD, as the Executive Assistant to the Associate Director. Prior to joining the Department of Veterans Affairs, he served in the U.S. Air Force for 22 years.

Matthews is a graduate of the University of Maryland and received his master’s degree in Healthcare Management from the University of Phoenix. He is currently a member of the 2010 Executive Career Field Career Development Program.
