Eastern Oklahoma VA Health Care System
VA to Host Weight Management Program for Veterans
March 9, 2012
March is National Nutrition Month and a good time to focus on eating wisely and striving for a healthy weight. In honor of National Nutrition Month and Dietitian's Day, the Jack C. Montgomery VA Medical Center will present a program on March 9 about VA’s MOVE Weight Management Program and Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (HPDP).
Guest speaker will be Kristi Bellard, RD, VA’s regional MOVE coordinator and HPDP program manager, who will focus on the success of the MOVE Program, outcomes, future directions, and how it incorporates VA’s healthy living messages. The program will be held from 11:30 am – 1 pm in the Downing Room.
The MOVE program provides Veterans with nutrition education and exercise counseling, and helps them identify behavior changes needed for long-term weight loss and weight maintenance. The medical center also provides hands-on training through its new Healthy Cooking classes. Patients in the past year recorded a combined weight loss of 2,755 pounds.
The VA offers group classes and individual sessions for Veterans at the main facility in Muskogee, as well as in its outpatient clinics in Tulsa, Vinita and Hartshorne. Veterans can also get involved in MOVE by using the Weight Management/TeleMOVE program, which is now offered at each site over video-teleconferencing.
